The first Saraswati Shishu Mandir brand of school was started in Gorakhpur in 1952, under the leadership of Nanaji Deshmukh Ji. The name was given as Saraswati Shishu Mandir which means Temple of the Goddess Saraswati dedicated to the children. A state-level Shishu Shiksha Prabandh Samiti was formed in 1958 for their proper guidance and planned development. Shishu Mandirs started spreading in other states and within a few years, many schools were established. To manage the affairs in different regions, state-level committees were set-up. The formation of a national body came in 1977 and Vidya Bharati Akhil Bharatiya Shiksha Sansthan was established with its Registered office at Lucknow & functional headquarters in Delhi. Vidya Bharti Akhil Bhartiya Shiksha Sansthan is world's one of the largest educational NGOs which runs the largest private network of schools in India. Vidya Bharati is giving Bharatiya Darshan and Sanskar to around 34,65,631 students who are studying in 12,828 Vidya Bharati’s schools starting from primary level to the college covering cities, towns, villages and remote villages including hills and border areas.
